Taylor Swift would be more popular than MAGA in any contest

Some fans of former President Donald Trump believe that pop star Taylor Swift is secretly working for the government to support Joe Biden's reelection. They've tried to criticize her for it.

But recent polls show that this isn't a smart move. Taylor Swift is extremely popular in America, and these Republicans are out of touch with most people who don't think she's working for the government.

A recent poll from Monmouth University makes this clear. Swift has a 39% favorable rating, with only 13% viewing her unfavorably, and 43% saying they don't have an opinion. Among those who do have an opinion, 75% see her positively.

Even among Republicans, she has a 25% favorable rating compared to 18% unfavorable. So, more Republicans like her than dislike her. Among those with an opinion, 58% view her favorably.

These numbers are similar to a poll from Marist College in December, once you remove those who don't have an opinion.

Comparatively, Trump is much less popular than Swift. His favorable rating is around 45%, with 55% viewing him unfavorably, according to recent polls. This means his favorability is about 25 to 30 points lower than Swift's, depending on the poll.

One study suggested that Taylor Swift might have influenced about 1 million votes for Obama during his primary battle with Hillary Clinton in 2008. This could have played a role in Obama winning the Democratic nomination, especially in such a close race.

Because Oprah Winfrey was seen as influential in getting votes for Obama, many Democrats are hoping Taylor Swift can do the same for Biden. Although Swift has supported Democrats before, she hasn't endorsed Biden for the 2024 election yet.

In 2018, Swift was linked to over 30,000 new voter registrations when she encouraged people to sign up to vote. A Monmouth poll found that most Americans (68%) approve of Swift encouraging people to vote in the 2024 election.

Swift's support for liberal causes and her boyfriend Travis Kelce's advocacy for Covid-19 vaccinations might be reasons why Trump supporters are targeting her.

However, it's a big stretch to think that Swift supporting Democrats means the government is secretly helping her. This is a belief held by only about 1 in 6 Americans (18%), with the vast majority (73%) considering it false.

Like with the Obama "birther" conspiracy theory, those who believe in the Swift conspiracy theory are mostly from the right side of the political spectrum. About a third of Republicans (32%) think there's a secret government plot to elevate Swift, while only 6% of Democrats share this belief.

Overall, most Americans who have an opinion on Swift view her positively. There hasn't been any significant backlash against her or those associated with her.

Lately, Swift has boosted the popularity of others, such as her boyfriend's podcast and the NFL, which saw record ratings for the recent Super Bowl, particularly among 18- to 24-year-old women, who are a core demographic for Swift.

Any Republican who opposes Swift would likely be making a big mistake.
